100 Shrines Truly Worth Visiting

Kinkengu Shrine

金劔宮Kinkengu

Said to be among Hokuriku's oldest shrines, a place of prayer for financial fortune.

History and Divine Virtue

Kinkengu stands in the town of Tsurugi overlooking the alluvial fan of the Tedori River, and shrine tradition dates its founding to the third year of Emperor Sujin's reign, making it one of the oldest shrines in the Hokuriku region. Originally called Tsurugi-no-miya or Tsurugi Shrine, it is said to have given the town of Tsurugi its name. Its principal deity is Ninigi-no-Mikoto, enshrined together with Okuninushi-no-Kami, Kotoshironushi-no-Kami, Sarutahiko-no-Kami, and others. Counted among the Seven Shrines of Hakusan, it has carried its history as a linchpin of Hakusan worship and a shrine revered by the warrior class. The auxiliary shrine Ototsurugisha within the grounds enshrines Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto, and in recent years, as stories spread of business leaders coming to pray here, the shrine came to be spoken of as one of "Japan's three great shrines of financial fortune." At heart it remains the tutelary shrine of the old village of Tsurugi, and its quiet precincts hold the pleasures of a true old shrine: a stone where the warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have rested, and the celebrated spring water of the Tenneishi rock.

Visiting Notes

  • The prayers for financial fortune are directed to Ototsurugisha, an auxiliary shrine within the grounds; custom holds that one should visit the main shrine first.
  • The Yoshitsune Koshikake-ishi, a stone where Minamoto no Yoshitsune is said to have rested on his journey north to Oshu, remains in the precincts.
  • Many worshippers combine the first-of-the-month otsuitachi-mairi here with a visit to Shirayamahime Shrine.
The MUSUHI TECHO View

As the character for gold in its name suggests, Musuhi Techo reads this as a shrine of the metal element among the Five Phases. Autumn, the season of harvest, is when metal energy waxes strongest — a fitting time, we find, for prayers to gather in and store one's wealth.
