Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine
The Benzaiten of the performing arts, worshipped to the sound of the Isuzu bells.
History and Divine Virtue
The shrine stands in the land of Tenkawa, looking toward Mount Misen, a sacred peak of the Omine range, and enshrines Ichikishimahime no Mikoto as its principal deity. From the age when Shinto and Buddhism were intertwined, she has been worshipped here as Benzaiten, and the shrine has been counted among Japan's three great Benzaiten sanctuaries. Its origins are said to date to the Asuka period, when the ascetic En no Gyoja offered prayers on Mount Misen, and the shrine has walked alongside the Omine tradition of mountain asceticism ever since. Benzaiten is held to govern water, the performing arts, and talent; the shrine's ties to Noh theater run especially deep — precious Noh masks and costumes have been dedicated here, including a mask associated with Zeami, and Noh is still performed before the deity. It is known for drawing musicians, actors, and other performers as a god of the arts. The Isuzu, a distinctive sacred instrument of bells said to embody three spirits, is the shrine's emblem, and worshippers offer their prayers to the ringing of the bells at the worship hall. The village of Tenkawa, where the shrine stands, lies at a trailhead of the ascent to Mount Omine — a hamlet of prayer that has welcomed pilgrims since ancient times.
Visiting Notes
- The great Isuzu bells hung in the worship hall are an instrument unique to this shrine. Ring them as you offer your prayer.
- On the Noh stage facing the worship hall, Noh is dedicated to the deity on occasions such as the annual grand festival.
- Tenkawa is the gateway village of Omine asceticism. Visit quietly, together with the purification hall and the clear streams nearby.
Benzaiten is a deity of the waterside. In the five phases, the water element is said to nourish wisdom and expression — a shrine to visit from season to season for those who make their living in the arts or in sharing their voice, and those whose birth chart carries water.
