100 Shrines Truly Worth Visiting

Konko Inari Shrine (Inner Shrine)

金光稲荷神社(奥宮)(Konkō Inari Jinja (Okumiya))

Five hundred steps beneath vermilion torii, the Inari of Mount Futaba.

History and Divine Virtue

At the foot of Mount Futaba, north of Hiroshima Station, this Inari shrine stands within the grounds of Hiroshima Toshogu, and is said to have been established at the time of the Toshogu's founding to pray for the protection and prosperity of the castle town. The lower shrine sits beside the Toshogu's halls; from there, vermilion torii line a stairway of roughly five hundred steps up the slope of Mount Futaba to the inner shrine. Cherished by the people of Hiroshima as an Inari of prosperity and good fortune, each of its torii was dedicated by a devoted shop or company. From the inner shrine the city of Hiroshima and Hiroshima Bay spread out in a single view, and many climb in the early morning or evening as part of their worship. Since the days of the Mori and Asano clans, Mount Futaba has been held to guard the castle town's northeastern quarter, and it forms part of the Futaba-no-sato Historical Walk that links the Toshogu, Nigitsu Shrine, and other venerable shrines and temples.

Visiting Notes

  • An auxiliary shrine of Hiroshima Toshogu. The customary route is to worship at the Toshogu first, then the lower Inari shrine, then climb to the inner shrine.
  • About five hundred stone steps beneath vermilion torii lead to the inner shrine; allow thirty to forty minutes for the round trip.
  • The inner shrine commands a view over Hiroshima city and the bay. Morning visits are especially clear and refreshing.
  • Goshuin seals and amulets are available at the Toshogu shrine office. The steps are slippery in rain.
The MUSUHI TECHO View

An Inari resting on the mountain that guards the castle town's demon gate. Musuhi Techo places it as a shrine to climb step by step when one wishes to steady the flow of trade or rise a rung in one's work.
