Ogamiyama Shrine

大神山神社(Ōgamiyama Jinja)

Shrine of the sacred Mount Daisen, with an inner sanctuary reached by a natural-stone path.

History and Divine Virtue

Ogamiyama Shrine venerates Mount Daisen, the sacred peak of Hoki, as its divine body and enshrines Onamuchi no Mikoto (Okuninushi). Its name is said to derive from the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki, which calls Daisen 'Okami-dake', the Peak of the Great God, and its origins lie in the worship of the mountain itself. The lower shrine stands at Odaka in Yonago, and the inner shrine, the okumiya, partway up Mount Daisen; because heavy snow closes the inner shrine in winter, rites are then held at the lower shrine, so the two are also called the Winter Shrine and the Summer Shrine. The approach to the inner shrine is a path of natural stones about 700 meters long, said to be the longest of its kind in Japan. The inner sanctuary at its end is among the largest gongen-zukuri buildings in the country, and together with its interior of white-sandalwood lacquer is designated an Important Cultural Property. With the neighboring temple Daisen-ji it forms the heart of the mountain's faith and preserves the history of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism.

Visiting Notes

  • The approach to the inner shrine is a natural-stone path of about 700 meters, said to be the longest of its kind in Japan.
  • The inner sanctuary is among the largest gongen-zukuri buildings in Japan. The rear-facing gate known as the Upside-down Gate is another highlight.
  • In winter (roughly December to April) the inner shrine is closed and rites are held at the lower shrine. Check before visiting.
  • Visiting the adjacent Daisen-ji temple as well reveals the full picture of the mountain's faith.
The MUSUHI TECHO View

A shrine born of worship of the mountain itself. Musuhi Techo holds that at a great turning point, the climb up the stone path, step by step, is a way of returning to one's origins and settling the heart.
