Takamahiko Shrine

高天彦神社(Takamahiko Jinja)

Shrine of the musubi deity, in a place handed down as Takamagahara, the High Plain of Heaven.

History and Divine Virtue

Takamahiko Shrine stands at the eastern foot of Mount Kongo in Kitakubo, Gose, in the district called Takama, and enshrines Takamimusubi no Kami, one of the three deities of creation. The area has long been handed down as an earthly site of Takamagahara, the High Plain of Heaven of the myths, and the shrine worships the peak of Mount Kongo (Shirakumo-mine) rising behind it as its sacred mountain. Surrounded by giant cedars, the shrine has no main sanctuary behind its worship hall; prayers are offered toward the mountain itself, preserving an ancient form of worship. The approach runs through an avenue of cedars several centuries old, and within the precincts is the Tsuchigumo-zuka, a mound linked to the legend of the earth-spider. The shrine is also thought to have honored the ancestral deity of the Katsuragi clan, and it lies at the innermost end of the Katsuragi Kodo trail. Takamimusubi is regarded as a deity of musubi, the power that brings all things into being and binds them together, the very word from which this site takes its name.

Visiting Notes

  • There is no main sanctuary; the peak of Mount Kongo is worshipped as the sacred mountain from the worship hall.
  • The cedar avenue of the approach is several centuries old. Morning and evening mist gives the place the look of the High Plain of Heaven of legend.
  • The Tsuchigumo-zuka is handed down as the burial mound of the earth-spider subdued during Emperor Jimmu's eastern campaign.
  • Near the end of the Katsuragi Kodo trail; allow half a day to link it on foot with Takakamo and Katsuragi Hitokotonushi shrines.
The MUSUHI TECHO View

Dedicated to Takamimusubi, the deity whose name carries the word musubi, this is a root shrine for this site. Musuhi Techo gives it a special place for those who wish to bring something into being or to bind things anew.
