Haruna Shrine

榛名神社Haruna Jinja

An ancient shrine of the deities of fire and earth, cradled among the crags of Mount Iwao.

History and Divine Virtue

The shrine rests in the embrace of a rocky mountain called Iwao-yama, partway up Mount Haruna. Traditionally founded in 586, it is an ancient shrine of old Kozuke Province, listed in the Engishiki register. Its deities are Homusubi no Kami, deity of fire, and Haniyamahime no Kami, deity of earth. The approach runs some 700 meters along a gorge where strange crags and great rocks tower overhead; from the zuishinmon gate to the main sanctuary — past a purification hall, a three-storied pagoda, and stone steps threading between the rocks — the sense of sacred ground deepens with every step. The main sanctuary is built against a great rock called the Misugata-iwa, with the shrine's sacred body enshrined in a cavern within the rock itself — a singular arrangement — and six of its buildings, including the main sanctuary, the Kunimotosha, and the Soryumon gate, are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. With blessings said to span fire prevention, the opening of fortune, abundant harvests, and prosperous business, it has been called an "all-purpose power spot," and in every season worshippers climb the gorge approach.

Visiting Notes

  • From the entrance to the main sanctuary is a climb of about 15 minutes on foot, past the Kurakake Rock and the Yatate Cedar.
  • The carving-covered Soryumon gate and the main sanctuary, built as if clinging to the Misugata-iwa rock, are essential viewing.
  • Statues of the Seven Lucky Gods are scattered along the approach — searching them out makes the walk a pleasure.
The MUSUHI TECHO View

A shrine enshrining the deities of fire and earth together: in the five phases this is the generative bond by which fire gives birth to earth. It is held to be a place of ties for those who wish to settle their burning effort into lasting harvest, or to rebuild the very foundation of their fortune.
